Squidoo is a web page creation site. The site is the brainchild of Seth Godin who is a marketing guru known for books like Purple Cow, Permission Marketing, and Meatball Sundae. My particular favorite is the small book The Dip. The Dip is more philosophical in nature, than the marketing books which I would have to say are cultural. It has to do with the overcoming a dip in excitement in any endeavor to get to what we would term success, whatever that might be.

Anyway, back to Squidoo. There have been plenty of make your own web site services before. Remember geocities, tripod, or angelfire? But Squidoo changed the mold by offering a single standardized format for pages which they inexplicably call lens. The content of “lens” are placed in a modular format to compose a page. So, all lens have a uniform look and feel. The other change is a community has developed around lens, which is very Seth Godin and very Web 2.0. Finally, the biggest difference is that Squidoo is willing to share profits from advertisements and sales from the lens. This is a departure from other sites that allow you to do your thing but supports itself with advertising. This site shares it with the “lens” makers. Also, you can opt to share their portion or give all to charity.
