Not enough space in Twitter or face book to pour my… rage? frustration? consternation? But the University of Kansas has saw fit to hire Turner Gill as the new football head coach. KU fired Mark Mangino for apparently yelling and poking a linebacker in the chest. Woody Hayes has to be rolling over in his grave. Apparently NCAA division 1-A football coaches can no longer poke a player. Heck, in the eighth grade I had my facemask yanked, helmet slapped, and was kicked in the butt by coaches (sometimes all in the same practice). That was before the horrors of high school ball. OK, so political correctness and a mediocre season did Mangino in.
But to replace him with a Turner Gill? Had to look him up as coach for the University of Buffalo and his “accomplishments” are an 8-5 season in one of four seasons. The other three years are losing seasons including this past year. Then a MAC championship to go along with that one winning season. That championship season (or the losing seasons) are playing powerhouses like Bowling green, Akron, Kent State, Miami (the one with the OH in parentheses), and then playing mighty Ball State in the championship game. KU passed over Stanford coach Jim Harbaugh and East Carolina’s Skip Holtz for Turner Gill?
Regardless, I am a Sooners fan even with our 7-5 record and upcoming Sun Bowl appearance. Guess, I just have an affection for Kansas having lived in Lawrence (my favorite college town) for a bit and for Mangino as a fellow fat man. I just don’t get how KU decides on a Turner Gill as a good choice.
